Mother's Day Card

I just felt the need to colour!  And this is what happened....

It was quick and easy!  Here is how you can do it!

Supplies:
Quietfire Keep Calm and Call Mom
Elizabeth Craft Designs Stitched and Fitted Ovals
Imagine Crafts VersaMagic Midnight Black
Arches 140# HP Watercolour Paper
Ranger Queen's Gold Embossing Powder
Tombow Dual Brush Pens 703, 847,703 and 249
Tombow Mono Adhesive Dot Dispenser
Tombow 3D Foam Tabs
brush for blending
water
heat tool
Bazzill Cardstocks

Instructions:
  1. Form a 6 x 5" tent-fold card base from light green cardstock.
  2. Stamp sentiment on watercolour paper and immediately sprinkle with embossing powder.  Heat emboss.
  3. Use markers to add colour to petals and leaves.  Blend with water to get a watercolour wash effect.  Allow to dry. Not all markers blend well with water.  Test yours out on a scrap piece of watercolour paper!
  4. Die cut sentiment with stitched oval and mat with a slightly larger fitted oval die cut from dark green cardstock.
  5. Adhere watercolour oval to green oval with Mono Adhesive.  Attach to card front with foam tabs.
Sweet!  I know yours will turn out even better!
Happy creating, Suzanne

The New Colored Pencil: Create Luminous Works with Innovative Materials and Techniques

Coloured pencils are a must-have in my Studio-To-Go kit.  They are portable, inexpensive, and readily available, requiring little else to create “cool” effects on paper.  We all have pencil crayons in our stash, but do we really use them to their full capability?  “Cool” effects can go to stunning results with the information provided in this book. My tentative Craft Art can become Fine Art!

When I was asked to review “The New Colored Pencil: Create Luminous Works with Innovative Materials and Techniques” by Kristy Ann Kutch, I was delighted to find a book filled with useful information, beautiful examples and exciting techniques with which to experiment.

“The New Colored Pencil” incorporates many recent product and technique innovations in the pencil crayon realm.  It is well organized, with three sections; pencil crayons, watercolour pencil crayons, and pastel crayons, such as Caran d’Ache NeoArt and Lyra Aquacolors. It is easy to locate whatever information you might want to explore. Reference tables are included in each section and a comprehensive colour guide for major brands has been added in an Appendix.

Ms. Kutch gives us insight into the composition and construction of pencil crayons to ensure that we understand why one pencil is more suited to a specific style. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Surfaces are explored (and not just paper), along with methods like blending, brushing, grating, spattering and misting. In addition to application of color, we learn that there are almost as many ways to remove it! And I thoroughly enjoyed the variety of artwork shown by Ms. Kutch and her colleagues. Samples include flowers, landscapes, pets and portraits.

Ms. Kutch shares step by step processes detailing the use of the colored pencils in her many examples as well as possible pitfalls and how to minimize mistakes.  A section on colour theory and tips on composition give added value to this book.  There are more than enough morsels of inspiration to keep us exploring pencil crayon art for a long time.

Coloured pencils are a must-have in my travel kit, and are always on my table as well. “The New Coloured Pencil” will be close by.

Painting in the T : Thanks - Fill 'er Up T

When I challenged to the Design Team to share their creative talents by filling up the T in the new stamp set, I knew exactly what I wanted to do!  A "landscape". Yeah, I know, kinda weird.....

Supplies:
Thanks - Fill 'er Up T - now available with the cling & foam option!
Stonehenge Paper
Brilliance Galaxy Gold Stamp Pad
Queen's Gold Embossing Powder
W&N French Ultramarine Blue Watercolour
W&N Raw Sienna Watercolour
Spellbinders Valiant Honor die set
Spellbinders Grand Calibur
American Crafts Winter Cardstock Pad
Be Creative Tape, Pop Dots

Instructions:
  1. Cut Stonehenge to 10" x 7" with the deckle edge along the 7" side.  Fold into a 5" x 7" card. Cut light blue cardstock to 4 1/8" x 5 1/2" rectangle and cut dark blue cardstock to 4 3/8" x 5 5/8" rectangle.
  2. Stamp Thanks - Fill 'er Up T on to a piece of Stonehenge. (Stonehenge was chosen because it is smooth for stamping onto, but acts a lot like watercolour paper.) Thermal emboss with Queen's Gold embossing powder.
  3. Paint your landscape.  French Ultramarine Blue and Raw Sienna make an incredible range of colours when mixed.
  4. Center your painted design inside the largest Valiant Honor rectangle and use the Grand Calibur to die cut and emboss.
  5. Use Pop Dots to mat to light blue cardstock rectangle and Be Creative Tape to mat to dark blue cardstock rectangle. Adhere to card base using Be Creative Tape.
